I recently attended a course ran by the Disney Institute, all about their approach to business excellence. I wanted to go on the course as I have a lot of respect for the Disney brand and everything they do (having visited a couple of their theme parks and watched many of their films!), so I thought that I could definitely learn a thing or two from them. The course leaders were incredibly passionate (as you would expect) and I have to admit that their energy and enthusiasm meant they had the whole room eating out of their hands. They took us through the many areas we should be looking at to deliver a truly excellent business, including leadership, our employees (or cast members as Disney call them), our customers (or guests in Disney terms), growth and profitability, and shareholder value.
There’s so much that I’ve taken away from the course and here’s just a few of the questions we’re going to be asking ourselves about our business:
- What story can we tell?
- What language and symbols do we use?
- What are our values and how do we communicate these?
- What behaviours do we display and what messages do these give out?
- What do we know about our customers? Do we understand them?
- Is it a hassle to do business with us?
How many of these things have you thought about for your business?
