Blueleaf Strategist Tom has been a key member of the Blueleaf team for just over 18 months now. His nickname is ’Jenks’ on account of the fact that he pretended he was younger than he really is when he first started – his boyish good looks helped him get away with it! Tom’s one of the characters here, as you can tell, until it comes to work of course, where he has an amazing eye for detail. Over to Tom to tell us about a “typical” day.

6.30am: This is when my day usually starts. Once I’m up, showered and dressed, I head downstairs to wake our very excitable three-year old border terrier, Roxie, and we head out for our morning walk. My wife Lauren and I recently moved to Knutsford, which is filled with beautiful countryside and a half-hour ramble through the nearby heath and woodland sets me up perfectly for the day ahead.

08.30am: After a 45-minute commute along the Cheshire lanes, I arrive at the office. We operate a flexi-time scheme here at Blueleaf, which is really handy – especially for those with families or who, like us, are about to start one (that’s breaking news).

08.35am: Time for a strong coffee, my one and only vice! As a Strategist, my main day-to-day focus is around scoping new projects and enhancements and putting together quotations and costings. I’m lucky that I get to work with such a varied and interesting selection of clients across multiple industry sectors but largely in the ecommerce domain. I enjoy getting under the skin of their businesses to assess potential new opportunities and help them achieve their goals. Throughout the day, I work closely with our talented user experience team and lead developers, liaising with clients, bouncing ideas around and discussing solutions, before going back to my desk to draft up all the necessary scoping and specification documentation.

I spend quite a bit of time out and about; meeting clients, pitching and attending seminars and conferences. It’s important in the ever-changing world of digital to keep on top of new developments and I’m always keen to hear about new technologies, to see what we can incorporate into our solutions for clients.

The culture at Blueleaf is great in that it encourages us to enjoy work and have fun while in the office. The days go by quickly when you’re bouncing ideas off each other and considering various points of view. It also helps that some of the funniest people I know work here at Blueleaf. I always have an anecdote to share with Lauren when I get home.

5.30pm: I’m usually ready to leave the office at this time. Depending on the day, I’ll often hit the M56 into Manchester to play squash or use the gym…cursing the traffic all the way. Either that or I’ll be back on the country lanes, when I’ll quite often meet up with Lauren for a beer on our way back home to Roxie. Then it’s onto nursery planning for our new arrival, who’s due to make his debut in early May.
